Food/Hygiene Pantry

Big Mama’s Safe House offers a Food & Hygiene Pantry at both of our locations to support individuals and families in need. We provide essential items such as non-perishable food, toothpaste, deodorant, and period packs—free of charge. Whether you're experiencing a tough time or simply need a little extra support, our pantry is here to help. Everyone deserves access to basic necessities, and we're committed to making sure our community has what it needs to thrive.

Locations & Hours

Bexar County Rental Assistance Program

The Bexar County Rental Assistance Program helps families stay in their homes by providing financial assistance to renters experiencing hardship. Qualified households may receive up to $3,500 in rental assistance and $1,500 in utility assistance, paid directly to landlords or utility providers.

Key Information:

Applications are accepted monthly on the second Wednesday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Renters must show an active Notice to Vacate or Eviction Citation.
Assistance is not guaranteed, and households can only receive funds once every 12 months

To Apply, You’ll Need:

A valid identification for everyone in the household
A lease within San Antonio city limits
Proof of financial hardship (e.g., job loss, reduced hours, medical bills)
Proof of income for the past 60 days (must be below 80% of Area Median Income)
Documentation of rent/utility debt
Asset information if anyone has over $5,000 in savings or property

The housing provider must participate and register with the City of San Antonio to receive payment. If they choose not to, the application will be denied.

Free Gun Locks

Big Mama’s Safe House is proud to offer free gun locks at both of our locations to help promote safety and prevent gun violence in our communities. This initiative is made possible through our partnership with Bexar County, University Hospital, and Be SMART. By working together, we’re committed to providing families with the tools they need to store firearms securely and protect loved ones—especially children—from accidental shootings. Stop by either location to pick up a free gun lock and join us in building a safer, stronger community.

Department of Human Services Utility Assistance

The City of San Antonio Department of Human Services offers utility assistance to eligible residents who need help paying their utility bills.

Required Documents:

Proof of income from the past 30 days for all household members age 18+
Award letters (Social Security, SSI, Disability, Unemployment) or recent bank statements
Current utility bill(s)
Photo ID of the account holder (e.g., Texas ID, Driver’s License, or Matricula Consular)
Last 4 digits of the account holder’s Social Security Number

After submitting your application, you can log in to check your status or view previous applications.
